Abstract
Background: Final irrigation can modify radicular dentine and consequently influence the adhesion of root canal sealers. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and 0.2% chitosan on the push-out bond strength of AH Plus and BioRoot RCS sealers.
Methods: Sixty extracted human mandibular premolars with single roots and canals were prepared using standardised endodontic instrumentation. Following instrumentation, specimens were assigned according to the final irrigant and sealer combination: 17% EDTA with AH Plus, 17% EDTA with BioRoot RCS, 0.2% chitosan with AH Plus, and 0.2% chitosan with BioRoot RCS. After obturation and incubation, root specimens were sectioned into 2.0 ± 0.1 mm slices and subjected to push-out testing using a universal testing machine. Bond strength was expressed in megapascals.
Results: The highest mean push-out bond strength was recorded for 17% EDTA with AH Plus (8.45 ± 0.62 MPa). This was followed by 0.2% chitosan with BioRoot RCS (8.10 ± 0.60 MPa) and 17% EDTA with BioRoot RCS (7.95 ± 0.60 MPa). The lowest value was observed for 0.2% chitosan with AH Plus (6.90 ± 0.55 MPa). The reported intergroup analyses showed statistically significant differences.
Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the effect of the final chelating agent on push-out bond strength varied according to the sealer used. EDTA produced the highest value with AH Plus, whereas chitosan produced a higher value with BioRoot RCS.
